Blu Flame
Phillyrap: Who was your influence when you started your rap career?
Blu-Flame: Basically, It was Jay-Z and DMX. They were original; they had their own style. But, I would have to say Jay-Z was my biggest influence.
PR: What was it about Jay-Z that made you want to start rapping?
BF: I have this thing about him in that he reminds me of me a little bit. Hes himself, nobody can tell him what to do, hes own boss, and hes different from your average rapper.
PR: At what age did you realize you had a gift for music and lyrics?
BF: I started around 12 or 13, about 10 years ago.
PR: The first time I saw you rapping was on Im Not A Rapper Volume 3, whats up with Plummer and how has he helped you in your career?
BF: Plummer does a lot, and weve built a relationship that is more than rap. In the beginning, it was just about the rap, but then I guess he must have seen something in me. He does way more than the DVDs for me, he did one of the CD covers thats about to come out The Best of Blu Flame. He doesnt just do that for everybody. Plummer definitely sees something in me that other people dont, because most people just jump on the bandwagon of whats hot. But, Plummer, he really listens to the lyrics and believes that Im better than some of these people.
PR: I personally believe Plummer doesnt get the credit that he deserves, because a lot of people wouldnt be able to shine like they do if it wasnt for him. Do you agree or disagree?
BF: Yea, he is someone who will take a person on but at the same time look at their work ethic. He can put you on (a DVD), but it really depends on your work ethic and consistency. A lot of peoples relationship kind of fell out with him, but if youre willing to work with him he really works with you, you know, if he sees the talent and sees that you need help.
PR: I want to bring up Im Not a Rapper, Volume 3 again. I remember seeing you and Young Hot going in lyrically, whats the relationship between you and him?
BF: Thats like my brother, I see him everyday. Right now hes out in Orlando handling some business, but he called me earlier. But, hes like a brother from another, if you know what I mean. I call his mom Mom, she calls me her son. Theyre like family. Hot is another one people have to look out for. I know the whole Mook battle looked kind of bad on his end, but his work ethic is everything. A lot of people dont have the work ethic that he has. I remember we went into this studio one day; he had about a 100 songs to do and scratched all of them. He has work ethic, we call him the Lil Wayne of Philly. You might hear him repeat versus on DVDs but youll never hear him repeat something on a mixtape. Hes pretty good (laughs).
PR: We respect how you chose to stay neutral during the whole battle between Headshots and Touch Money. What were your thoughts at that time?
BF: At that time I wasnt really into that because I was never with Touch Money, I was just associated with them. Im from West Philly, so, since Touch Money was in West Philly and we all rapped at one point, I was associated with them. But, if I was in North Philly and I was doing DVDs with Headshots supporting me, then everyone would think Im with Headshots. You know, I did my thing, I felt like I had to do something different. I dont go off the beefs, I go off of my own talents. A lot of people got into that battle because they wanted their name put out there. I said, Im going to do it a different way, Im going to do it my way. I want people to know me for my talent. I never pick sides, you know, Reed was doing his thing, Had was doing his thing, you know. But, It was fun to watch (laughs).
PR: What can our followers at Phillyrap.blogspot.com expect to see from you next?
BF: I have Flame of Fury, thats the Best of Blu Flame. Royal Blu is the next mixtape after that. I just wrote a movie script called True Love. Thats a story about a man that has to pick between the love of the streets, the love of his girlfriend and the love of his career. The Upscale Movement, Heavyweight Luxury, thats another mixtape coming up. You might see a mixtape with me and Young Hot together. But, you know Im writing little scripts and everything. There are a lot of people involved. Im going to do a couple things with Daddy-O. Im doing a lot with Reign Man (shout out to Reign Man). I got a lot of things coming, look out also for the Upscale clothing line.
PR: Would you be able to show us love in the fall for our Phillyrap.blogspot.com mixtape?
BF: Of course, of course (laughs). Im all for it. Just let me know, hit me up anytime.
