Zarinah has been called a staple in the Philadelphia hip-hop community. Known to attend every hip hop concert being a big named or local artist, she is known for her constant support. Being born and raised in Philadelphia she grew up in the illest eras of music. Taking a quick hiatus to the other side of the country...living in New Mexico for about 5 years is where a great deal of her Latin influences came from. Listening to various genres of music from alternative to soul she knew that music would change her life.
Her interest always lied in music but for a greater part of her life she focused on academics earning a Bachelor's Degree in Biological Sciences and a Minor in Spanish from an esteemed College. In her spare time she was involved in varying performing arts such as Hip Hop, Jazz and Afro-Modern dance which were studied at the Koresh Dance Company and with her own dance troupe. All the while taking various acting courses at the Wilma Theater, which is located on Philadelphias Avenue of the Arts. At the same time she studied piano under the incomparable jazz pianist Dave Burrell and soon after studied vocals under the beautiful jazz vocalist Sherry Butler, former backup singer for Teddy Pendergrass. Soon after taking a break from dance and solely focusing on music, she decided that music would be her main focus.
Busting out onto the scene in 2008 where she first graced the stage at the Underground, a local Philadelphia venue, she spit a vicious 16 bar freestyle. Soon after the name Goldie Jawn/Zarinah seemed to get a small street buzz. Within the past year she has had the pleasure to perform in the Cape May Jazz Festival with one of her mentors Sherry Butler. She also has rocked many venues such as The Trocadero, Liquid Charm and Silk City in her native of Philadelphia sharing the stage with acts such as Cymarshall Law, Writtenhouse, Oddisee, Kenn Starr and various others. Rocking a show for Brooklyn Bodega up in Brooklyn, NY was also one of the highlights of her budding career. She also graced the stages of Athens, Greece (as the headlining and only act) rocking for a crowd of over 1000 people who loved the vibe despite the language barrier. She was also the host of a radio show Beats and the City, which aired on 88.1fm but most recently made the change to internet radio where she hosts Official Champion Sound which airs every Sunday from 3-5pm on voltaradio.com
Being inspired by musicians such as the late great J Dilla, Beyonce, Black Milk, Carmen McCrae, Incubus, Lauryn Hill and Little Brother, Zarinah strives to make her own lane and earn the respect of her peers. Currently she is working on various collaborations with other artists such as Charlie K of Writtenhouse (Philly) KennStarr of the Low Budget Crew (DC) and Chaundon of the Justus League (NC), as well as her own projects which include: The Dope Becomes Her mixtape set to be released the fall of 09 and A Lotus in Bloom EP which is set to be released Summer of 2010. Joining the likes of other seasoned artists Zarinah is a forced to be reckoned with. Blending hip-hop, jazz, soul, rock and Latin she is dedicated in keeping great music alive. A Jane of all trades is what Zarinah is considered to be juggling many talents as an actress, musician, dancer and radio host. She is a new artist to keep on your radar.
